Getting started in Forza Horizon 6 can feel overwhelming at first. The game throws hundreds of cars, multiple progression systems, tuning options, and open-world activities at you almost immediately. But once you understand
how the main mechanics work
together, the entire experience becomes much easier to manage.
Unlike older Horizon games that focused mostly on racing progression, Forza Horizon 6 splits its gameplay into two major systems: Horizon Festival and Discover Japan. One focuses on organized racing and vehicle progression, while the other rewards exploration, photography, collectibles, and hidden activities across the map.
For new players, the real challenge is not simply winning races. It is learning how to build cars efficiently, earn credits without wasting money, and unlock the world quickly without burning out.
Understanding the Two Main Progression Systems
One of the first things new players notice is the split progression design.
The lime green Horizon Festival activities are your traditional racing events. Completing these races earns wristbands that unlock new regions and higher-level competitions.
The orange Discover Japan activities work differently. These are exploration-focused journal tasks that reward stamps, hidden discoveries, player houses, and special barn finds. Instead of pure racing skill, these activities reward curiosity and map exploration.
A lot of new players accidentally focus entirely on one side and ignore the other. The fastest progression comes from balancing both systems together.
If you get tired of racing, switch to exploration for a while. If exploration starts feeling repetitive, jump back into Festival events. The game is designed around alternating between the two.
The Biggest Early-Game Mistake: Buying Expensive Cars
One of the worst things beginners can do is spend all their starting credits on a flashy hypercar from the Autoshow.
The game already gives you a huge number of vehicles through wheelspins, seasonal rewards, story missions, and progression unlocks. Within a few hours, your garage will grow naturally.
Instead of wasting money early, focus on upgrading and tuning the cars you already own.
A properly tuned starter car can outperform far more expensive vehicles if built correctly. Learning how Performance Index (PI) works is much more important than owning rare cars during the early game.
How PI Manipulation Actually Works
Vehicle class is determined by the PI system, and understanding it is one of the most important mechanics in Forza Horizon 6.
Every upgrade increases or changes your PI rating. The trick is learning which upgrades provide the best real-world performance without pushing the car into a less competitive class.
Experienced players often use unusual combinations to maximize efficiency:
Lower-tier tire compounds sometimes keep PI lower while still offering enough grip.
Certain aero parts increase weight but barely affect performance.
Offroad tires can occasionally create powerful road-racing builds because of how the PI calculations work.
Engine swaps and power upgrades often give better value than pure grip upgrades.
This creates “meta builds” that stay in lower classes while producing massive horsepower.
For beginners, you do not need to overcomplicate things immediately. Just understand that higher PI does not always mean a faster or better car.
Why Car Mastery Matters So Much
Every vehicle has its own Car Mastery skill tree.
A lot of new players ignore these upgrades early on, but they are actually one of the fastest ways to build credits and wheelspins.
The best early strategy is simple:
Spend skill points regularly.
Prioritize Super Wheelspin rewards.
Unlock direct credit bonuses first.
Avoid wasting points on cosmetic perks early.
Because every car has a separate mastery tree, even cheap vehicles can provide useful rewards.
Over time, this system becomes one of the easiest ways to expand your garage without spending real effort grinding money.
Exploration Is Extremely Rewarding
The Japan map is packed with collectibles and hidden progression systems.
There are hundreds of regional mascots, boards, hidden roads, landmarks, and side activities scattered across the open world. Many players underestimate how profitable exploration can be.
The mascot collectibles alone reward huge amounts of credits over time. Simply driving off-road and exploring naturally can generate a massive amount of money without racing at all.
Another useful detail is that the map gradually becomes easier to clear as your regional completion increases. Once you hit major completion milestones, the remaining hidden collectibles start revealing themselves automatically.
That means you do not need to obsess over uncovering every tiny section of fog at the beginning.
The Photo Promo Trick Every Beginner Should Use
One of the easiest progression tricks in the game involves Horizon Promo photography.
At the start of almost every race, immediately enter photo mode before the race begins. Take a picture of the full AI grid.
Each unique vehicle photographed rewards progression points, and because races often contain many different cars, you can unlock huge amounts of journal progress without even finishing the event first.
This is especially useful early in the game when progression feels slower.
A surprising number of players completely ignore this mechanic even though it provides free rewards for almost no effort.
Difficulty Settings Directly Affect Your Income
Forza Horizon 6 rewards players for disabling assists.
The fewer driving aids you use, the higher your race payout multiplier becomes. Turning off major assists can increase race rewards dramatically.
However, new players should not disable everything immediately.
A balanced setup works much better while learning:
Keep ABS on at first.
Use Standard Steering.
Turn off Stability Control early because it limits cornering speed.
Learn manual shifting gradually.
Remove the full racing line once you know tracks better.
The goal is finding settings that increase rewards without making the game frustrating.
There is no shame in using assists while learning. The important part is gradually improving your control over the car.
Touge Battles Require Different Cars
Not every race in the game favors the same setup.
Standard circuit races reward balanced speed and grip, but Touge Battles and nighttime Street Races demand something very different.
These mountain races involve:
Tight corners
Heavy braking zones
Sudden elevation changes
Narrow roads
Civilian traffic
Large high-speed builds often struggle badly here.
It is worth building at least one lightweight, agile car focused on acceleration and handling specifically for these events. A smaller balanced setup usually performs much better than an overpowered highway monster in technical mountain racing.
Differential Settings Beginners Should Know
Tuning can seem intimidating, but differential settings alone can massively improve drivability.
For rear-wheel-drive setups, a good beginner baseline looks like this:
Rear Acceleration: 65%
Rear Deceleration: 20%
This combination helps maintain strong acceleration out of corners while reducing sudden instability during braking and corner entry.
If you convert a car to AWD, avoid leaving the center differential at the default 50/50 split.
A rear-biased AWD setup around 75% rear balance usually feels far more responsive and reduces heavy understeer.
Even small tuning changes like this can completely transform how a car behaves.
The real mechanic challenge in Forza Horizon 6 is learning how all the systems connect together.
Winning races is only one part of the experience. Efficient progression comes from understanding tuning, managing credits carefully, exploring the world intelligently, and building cars for specific situations.
New players who slow down and learn these systems early usually progress much faster than players who simply buy expensive cars and brute-force races.
